Get to know the prostate gland

What is the prostate gland


The prostate gland is an organ of the male reproductive system. It has a shape similar to a chestnut, with a width of 3 cm, length of 4 cm, and thickness of 2 cm. Its function is to produce fluid that nourishes sperm, making the sperm strong. The prostate gland is located around the initial part of the urethra as it begins to exit the bladder. Therefore, when diseases occur in the prostate gland, there are often abnormalities of urination in most cases.


Common diseases of the prostate gland


Benign prostatic hyperplasia (80%) is caused by prostate cells increasing in both size and number. It can be found from the age of 40 years and above, and is found more with increasing age. At age 50–60 years, it is found in 50%, at age 80 years, it is found in 80%.


Prostate cancer (18%) is caused by prostate cells changing growth into cancer cells. It can spread to bones, lymph nodes, or lungs. It is mostly found in those aged 50 years and above.


Prostatitis (2%) is caused by infection in the prostate gland or inflammation of unknown cause. It is found in the age group of 30–50 years.
